The FGM Landscape: Thought, Praxis, and the Role of Education
The UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme envisions abolishing FGM by 2030. Educational efforts to achieve this ambitious objective constitute the central theme of our gathering. Guided by an intersectional vision, we will come together in Oxford on 12 May 2025 to review synergies among academic research and grassroots initiatives, seeking inspiration from original analyses and approaches – featuring advertising, comic books, classroom content, community engagement, pageantry, drama, art, billboards, caravans, coaching in advanced use of media, and out-of-the-box thinking about FGM in broader contexts, i.e., economic development, the climate crisis, funding shortages, etc.. Issues in medical education also have a place. In the quest for understanding, ablation of girls’ genitalia can be illuminated by geopolitical theories, identity politics, legitimacy of voice, epistemic injustices, and pedagogies of change. Although no funding is available, attendance is free of charge. We welcome donations for refreshments but at participants’ discretion. UnCUT/VOICES Press – www.uncutvoices.com — is sponsoring the event. We regret inability to provide virtual access.
Anyone interested is welcome to attend but please email so we can estimate catering needs. If you wish to present, email name, affiliation, and a brief description of your experience with the theme by 1 May 2025:
