International Day of Rural Women 2023

International Day of Rural Women 2023 takes places on Sunday, October 15, 2023, and is designed to celebrate the essential roles that rural women play in food systems.

Sixty-six percent of working women in sub-Saharan Africa, seventy-one percent of working women in Southern Asia, and one-third of working women globally are employed in agri-food systems.

They hold central roles as producers, workers, processors, traders, retailers and consumers in food systems, and their efforts are essential to progress towards greater resilience and justice in agri-food systems.

UN Women – Rural women ensure food security for their communities, build climate resilience and strengthen economies. Yet, gender inequalities, such as discriminatory laws and social norms, combined with a fast-changing economic, technological and environmental landscape restrict their full potential, leaving them far behind men and their urban counterparts.
