For many years, cyber related and undercover research have been central to Terre des Hommes’ Sweetie and Watch programmes. After thorough analysis, we have come to the conclusion that this type of activity does not align with Terre des Hommes’ mission, and has been conflicting with the organization’s ethical standards and codes of conduct. Our focus within these programs was on detecting abusers instead of protecting the (eventual) victims.
Sweetie is a ten-year-old virtual Filipino girl. Her highly life-like image appears online in chat rooms and on dating sites. When men start talking with her in a sexually suggestive way, she engages back. All the information from their exchanges gets stored and used to warn, track down or even arrest and convict perpetrators.
Every day, hundreds of thousands of men around the world surf the internet. They seek boys and girls to engage in webcam sex. Often these men also travel as sex tourists to countries, such as the Philippines. Using the virtual character of Sweetie, we fight widespread child sexual exploitation, online and offline.
Tens of thousands of child victims in international online sex crime; cases disclosed by Terre des Hommes
Terre des Hommes Netherlands raises the alarm about a largely unknown, but quickly spreading new form of child exploitation that has got tens of thousands victims involved in the Philippines alone: webcam child sex tourism. In less than two and a half months Terre des Hommes researchers were able to identify over 1,000 adults who were willing to pay children in developing countries to perform sexual acts in front of the webcam. With the help of a virtual 10 year old Philippine girl the researchers identified adults from more than 65 countries. The video footage of the child predators has been handed over to the police authorities today.
