Somalia’s Al-Shabab group has flogged four people it accused of committing fornication in the southern town of Ja’ar late Friday afternoon.
July 22, 2018 – Al-Shabab militants have flogged four people, including a woman, after a court run by the group found the four guilty of fornication, an Al-Shabab judge has said.
The flogging — 100 lashes for each adult — took place in front of a large crowd in a public square in the southern town of Jaar.
One of the victims received 39 lashes because he was a minor, according to the Al-Shabab affiliated website Somali Memo.
Earlier in the week week, Al-Shabab flogged a 16 year-old boy 100 times and ordered him to pay a dowry to the girl involved. He was also expelled from the town for one year.
Victims of Al-Shabab executions and floggings do not receive legal representation and cannot expect fair judgements. Each year, dozens of people mainly accused of espionage, rape and theft are executed.
The group -linked to Al-Qaeda- is fighting to overthrow an internationally recognised but weak government in Mogadishu in order to implement its own version of a strict Islamic Sharia.
