Call for Papers – Special Issue of Journal of Lesbian Studies: Lesbians & The Law

The Journal of Lesbian Studies, a peer-reviewed academic journal published by Taylor and Francis, invites proposal submissions for a special issue on the subject of Lesbians and the Law. The Journal of Lesbian Studies examines the cultural, historical, and interpersonal impact of the lesbian experience on society, keeping all readers – professional, academic, or general – informed and up-to-date on current findings, resources, and community concerns. The journal is interdisciplinary in scope and is essential reading for independent scholars, lay people, professors, and students.

This special issue is intended to extend discussion of the relationship between lesbians (broadly defined as women who love women) and the law. The goal of the Special Issue is to explore the relational nexus between lesbians and different frameworks, processes, rules, policies, institutions, and applications of law. We are interested in contributions that engage with different theorisations of lesbian existence to explore the historical, contemporary, and future imaginings of the topic. Some possible topics include, but are certainly not limited to:

• Contact with institutions, systems, and processes: criminal processing systems (police, courts); legal authority (judiciary, coroners, administrators); criminal rehabilitation processes; and various forms of institutional violence
• Overrepresentation of First Nations and Indigenous lesbians in legal and criminal processing systems
• (In)visibility and recognition in law of lesbian identity, intimate relationships between women, and lesbian parented families
• Discussions of global north/south issues and we particularly encourage contributions from authors writing from within the global south
• Legal discrimination, where legal processes themselves discriminate against lesbians, including the intersection of multiple forms of marginalisation
• International and localised human rights perspectives around lesbians and the law
• Comparative, cross jurisdictional studies and localised studies with an international relevance
• Theoretical consideration of lesbians and the law in the context of feminist, intersectional, critical legal, critical race and whiteness, sociological, queer, and postcolonial studies as well as other interdisciplinary approaches

• Final papers due January 12, 2018
