Rosjke Hasseldine says that too many mothers and daughters today needlessly suffer with mother-daughter relationship problems, believing that their issues are unique and unsolvable. Rosjke’s recently published second book The Mother-Daughter Puzzle refutes these assumptions. As an accredited and registered psychotherapist with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and professional member of the American Counseling Association, with twenty years’ experience of listening to thousands of mothers and daughters of all ages and different countries and cultures, Rosjke has discovered what is causing today’s epidemic in mother-daughter relationship conflict, and how to heal it.
Rosjke’s life-long devotion to resolving mother-daughter conflict began when she was a teenager and struggling with her relationship with her mother. And when her daughter was born, Rosjke knew that she could no longer delay in discovering what had gone wrong between her mother and her. She knew that if she didn’t uncover the harmful dynamics between her mother and her, she would unknowingly repeat them with her daughter. She writes;
“What started as a personal quest quickly grew into my life’s calling as I realized that my mother’s and my conflict, though extreme, wasn’t unusual. Despite the research on women’s development, there is a world-wide epidemic of mother-daughter conflict that is screaming to be told, because solving the mother-daughter puzzle is essential for women’s emotional development, emotional empowerment, and equality”.
Understanding the often hidden and complex dynamics between mothers and daughters is vital in the understanding of ourselves as women, why we keep giving from a place of empty, and why we make the career and life choices we do. Through her research, Rosjke has discovered that understanding the causes of mother-daughter conflict requires a wide socio-cultural lens that maps women’s Mother-Daughter History and connects the dots between what’s happening in our mother-daughter relationship and how society and our generational family treats women. Through client case studies, Rosjke tells the story of women’s generational experience with sexism, gender inequality, emotional silence, and emotional neglect, and how they set mothers and daughters up for conflict.
“The time has never been more right for women to learn how emotional silence limits their voice and power. Equal rights laws have brought women a long way, but they have not and cannot change women’s generational experience of emotional silence and emotional neglect. It is time women uncovered these themes in their lives, and their mother’s and grandmother’s lives. It is time for women to recognize the dire emotional consequences women face when they surrender their needs in their relationships, families, and workplaces.”
