The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea – North Korea – is an exceedingly closed country. We rarely see photos of rural women – Do they know that North Korea signed CEDAW, and thus is accountable to the CEDAW Convention & Committee under international law. Are they aware that their country submitted a report to the CEDAW Committee in 2016 (ATTACHED). Do they realize there are CEDAW Committee General Recommendations on Rural Women, Violence Against Women. on Women’s Access to Justice, and multiple additional important themes for all women. Do they understand their Economic, Social & Cultural Rights, and that they should not have to live in extreme poverty, in hunger?
Photos of North Korea in the countryside, and of women there, are rarely available. We see the sharp contrast between the rural areas and the showplace of the country’s capital, Pyongyang.
But, the women of the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea are “our sisters” as women, and one day we hope they will/can tell more of their stories, and the realities of their lives.
