BuSSy is a performing arts project that documents and gives voice to censored untold stories about gender in different communities in Egypt. The project organizes storytelling workshops and performances where women and men step on stage to share stories about harassment, rape, gender discrimination, honor killing, forced marriage, Female genital mutilation, motherhood, domestic violence, child abuse, mass sexual assaults and many others, from different communities and cities in Egypt.

بصي هو مشروع فنى يهدف إلى خلق مساحة حرة للسيدات والرجال فى مصر لحكى التجارب الشخصية المسكوت عنها فى المجتمع. تقوم بصى أيضا بتوثيق وعرض قصص حقيقية فى شكل عروض مسرحية، بدون رقابة، في مجتمعات مختلفة في مصر. بصي تحاول مقاومة القيود المجتمعية من خلال المسرح. السيدات في مختلف المجتمعات والمدن المصرية يقفن على خشبة المسرح لمشاركة حكاياتهم عن التحرش والإغتصاب، والتمييز، وجرائم الشرف، والزواج القهري، والختان، والأمومة، والعنف الأسرى، والاعتداء الجنسي على الأطفال، والإعتداء الجنسي الجماعي، وغيرها من الموضوعات التى يصنفها المجتمع كتابوهات ممنوع الكلام عنها. ينظم المشروع ورش حكي لأفراد من خلفيات وأعمار مختلفة، ويقوم بتدريب المشاركين على الحكى ودعمهم وتشجيعهم على حكى قصصهم الشخصية على المسرح.

The BuSSy Story

In 2006, two American University of Cairo [AUC] students began directing a performance using stories of Egyptian women about their memories and experiences of womanhood. The monologues, which were by women, for women, exposed real women’s stories and provided a space for free expression on issues that society often failed to address. Thus began The BuSSy Project.

The monologue performances allow women to write for themselves instead of being written about. We are not professional artists; we are a group of passionate, enthusiastic youth with strong faith in the value and impact of the project.

In 2010, BuSSy transitioned from a university-affiliated group to an independent theater project holding a number of performances on stages all over Egypt. Over time, BuSSy performances began incorporating stories from both women and men; and today, the project extends beyond “women’s issues” as BuSSy now aims to tackle the complexity of gender issues from the perspectives of both women and men.

Our stories reflect the reality that we, as young Egyptian women and men, are living with regards to social issues that are experienced by all members of society, irrespective of class and background. We aim, through our performances, to reach the public directly, and expose the reality which society ignores, while also creating new opportunities for dialogue and awareness of many different important issues.

قصة بصى

بدأت بــُـصى فى 2006 على إحدى مسارح الجامعة الأمريكية فى القاهرة، لعرض وتوثيق تجارب وقصص النساء فى مصر ومشاكلهن. تنوعت العروض على مدار السنوات السبع الماضية بهدف خلق مساحة للتعبير عن قضايا المرأة، لاسيما تلك المسكوت عنها من الجميع

القائمين على العرض ليسوا من دارسى أو محترفى مسرح أو تمثيل، ولكن مجموعة من الشباب المتحمس لفكرة العرض، ومؤمن بأهميته وتأثيره. وبداية من 2010 خرجت “بـــُـصى” من إطار الجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة، وبدأت العمل كمشروع تطوعى مستقل، غير تابع لأى جهة، ويقيم عروضه على مسارح مختلفة بخلاف مسارح الجامعة الأمريكية

لماذا المسرح؟ يهتم فريق بــُـصى بتوصيل القصص لعدد كبير من الناس كل عرض وإتاحة الفرصة للشباب المشترك – ذكور وإناث – للتواصل مع المتلقي بشكل مباشر وتلقائي. مع الوقت تطورت عملية جمع القصص للعروض لتشمل قصص وتجارب للسيدات والرجال

قصصنا تحكى واقع نعيشه يربط بين فئات متنوعة داخل المجتمع. هدفنا هو توصيل هذه القصص للجمهور من خلال العروض، حتى نتمكن من تحقيق الهدف الأكبر وهو كشف الحقائق التى يمتنع المجتمع عن
