Twenty years ago the Beijing conference set ambitious targets to transform the lives of women across the world. The African Union declared 2015 the “Year of Women’s Empowerment” but how much has really changed for the women of Africa? What does equality mean for women in Africa?
Zeinab Badawi was chair at a Global Questions discussion in Nairobi recently. Ordinary Africans and audiences online and on social media had a chance to question key decision-makers about how women can play a bigger role in influencing policy decisions and shaping the future of their continent.
Why are so few women in positions of power and why does patriarchal politics still dominate the continent? Can female genital cutting ever be considered a choice?
Can polygamy be advantageous for women? What are African leaders doing to address alarming rates of violence against women?
Where are women in the business world and do current finance models empower them?

In a discussion entitled, What does Equality mean for Women in Africa?, the audience also asked important questions about the future of African women, the challenges they faced and the progress that had been made.
